About me
My roles in two international education institutions have involved communicating school messages and concepts to internal and external audiences. This has required considerable cross-divisional liaising, working with a variety of figures at all levels to ensure copy is accurate and engaging. Effective communication across an institution, and to a wider audience, is an essential part of my day-to-day work.
The roles have also included playing a key part in event organisation, from concept through marketing to execution. For example, at the university I helped organise and cover a national English teaching forum. At the school, I have been involved in a number of Centennial related events, coordinating promotion through the magazine and website, and covering events.
Representing the two departments I have worked in, I regularly attended meetings with senior management, providing overviews of current work, and coordinating with colleagues on future projects. I feel at ease working in large groups, close teams, and individually.
Both roles have involved website maintenance, responsible for updating content, reviewing and expanding readership, and experimenting with new concepts. For instance, at the university I was instrumental in launching an online staff forum, and helped create promotional videos for online viewing. In my current post I am looking to introduce new features to the website, including utilising flip-book technology, and online advertising. I recently conducted an online survey of current readers, with the intent of analysing the data to help produce an editorial blueprint for the magazine.
I have considerable experience producing press releases and features, and editing and proofreading promotional literature. Whilst at the university I provided copy, and was press contact, for the University of Liverpool. My current role as managing editor of the bimonthly magazine, I work with and supervise a team of designers and writers, plus being responsible over advertising, production, and distribution.
Accustomed to tackling numerous tasks of diverse purposes, I have worked alongside an array of people to deliver professional copy. I am competent in supervisory positions, with proven experience of coordinating, training and encouraging team members.
In addition to my 9-5 commitments, I enjoy writing regularly for Shanghai's leading English newspaper, Shanghai Daily, and also act as press officer for one of Shanghai's top nightclubs. I like to keep busy, especially if I'm learning my craft at the same time.
An ardent reader of all types of literature, I keep abreast of local and international news, particularly in the fields of education, new media, and politics. I am passionate about food, enjoying cooking as well as dining out — I am a great fan of the recipes and writings of Nigel Slater. A lover of the great outdoors, I have been fortunate to have been able to visit a number of fantastic locales, including trekking through the Himalayas, and roughing it in the forests of Borneo.
A problem-solving and ambitious individual with excellent interpersonal skills, I have a jovial and dependable manner. I believe all these experiences and skills can easily be transferred to suit your needs. A fast learner and highly driven, I believe that I would be a valuable asset to your team, and if given the opportunity, I would offer the same enthusiasm, professionalism, skills, and options to your organisation.
