About me
My name is Laurence Wood, I am a 21-year-old from Manchester. I have been designing for around ten years now starting off with the school magazine and news, which is still going today. I have carried my passion for design and photography into a career and I enjoy creating designs that hit the nail on the head. I enjoy creating designs that inform people and some of my favourite works have been information graphics sometimes about hard-hitting topic such as youth knife crime. I can put my hand to any style of design but I have a strong personal passion for modern minimalist design where I strip the design down to the biggest hitting elements and I create something that has no messing around and tackles the issues of the brief head-on. I enjoy working on different projects and find that I work best when I have new challenges that allow my in-depth research to achieve designs that work and speak to the intended audience on their level.
I have a strong working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign and a good understanding of Aftereffects and Premier. However, if the job was focussed more on one of the programmes, I would make sure to keep fresh with the updates they bring out. I have an in-depth knowledge of photography and photography editing. I also have a strong ability in Microsoft word and power point if that was needed. I am looking for a position which will allow me to grow to become part of a team and bring my knowledge and skills to the business and apply them in any way I can. I will be the first to say I do not have the experience that others applying for this position may have been able to get and due to the pandemic, I have struggled to find the industry experience I would have liked. However, what I do lack in experience I make up for with hard work, passion and a drive to succeed. However, from reading your job description and about the company I feel excited about the opportunity you are offering, to grow and learn whilst using my knowledge and skills in the design team.
I am hardworking and driven and over the last two years I have been a full-time university student, setting up a small business and working a part time job. I have gained the ability of detailed time management as well as the ability to work with surprise tight deadlines. Studying, working and setting up a small business has taught me to switch from one job to another and from one industry to another allowing me to mix with different people and have meetings and professional discussions in a range of industries. I have also had to change workplace positions where one day I am assisting a large business as a worker and the next day I am talking to a multi-millionaire client as the founder of my own business which combined with my weekly volunteering has taught me dexterity and how to work with my hands as well as digitally. This passion to work hard and succeed is something I want to apply to my job in graphic design and this experience over the last few years will help me deal with any problems and challenges that get thrown at me.
