I consult on PR and marketing for Africa's film industry. Current clients include Arcade Content, Egg Films, Showmax, Triggerfish Animation and Tulips and Chimneys - all market leaders in their respective sectors. I keep my client roster small to allow me to be hands-on.
I've worked with Africa's top filmmakers for the past 15 years - half as a critic, journalist, researcher and editor, half as a publicist and marketer.
My experience has given me a rare bird's eye perspective on the film industry here, as well as an understanding of the often conflicting perspectives of media houses, marketing managers and creatives, so many of whom are media shy.
While most of my work has been for South African clients, I've written for international media like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and ran the PR in Africa (with Joy Sapieka) for Al Jazeera English, so bring a global perspective to my projects.
For the last six years, I have been placing stories across the continent, developing a pan-African media database. While very aware that Africa is a not a country, I am passionate about the creation of a pan-African audience, which I believe is essential to the growth of an African film industry.
Africa still doesn't control its own narrative; we predominantly see ourselves distorted through a foreign gaze. While outsider perspectives are valuable, they become harmful when they dominate to the extent they have in Africa. Redressing this imbalance is part of what drives me and gives meaning to the work I do.
