About me

My name is Katie-May and I have recently graduated with an Upper Second Classification in 'Cultural Studies and Media' from the University of Kent. During my time at university I was awarded with a Scholarship of Academic Excellence. I am now seeking a career surrounding Digital Marketing, Public Relations and Communications. I have experience in this line of work from having been an intern for an incredibly successful agency in Canterbury, 'I Do Marketing' and from having completed the accredited 40-hour-long Google Digital Garage course in 'The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing'.

My experience in Digital Marketing has stemmed from coordinating activity on a range of platforms after having carried out recent work experience for 'I Do Marketing'. This work experience also allowed me to create and run social media and email campaigns in order to promote their services. These campaigns were often designed and created on 'Canva' and 'MailChimp' with an effort to ensure posts were designed in line with their existing branding. I also became familiar with other resources such as 'Google Keyword Planner' to gain a better understanding of SEO (search engine optimisation). As a result, I have great experience in creating and writing content for a variety of platforms and audiences. Likewise, I have vast experience in liaising with teams to ensure the content I have created has successfully met their targets. Throughout this work experience I was also frequently checking their social media 'insights' to gain detailed knowledge of when their followers were most active and engaged with posts. From this, I have learnt how to create in depth social media reports to present knowledge of how to increase follower engagement and drive traffic to a particular website. In other words, I am incredibly fluent with online social media platforms.

The Google Digital Garage course in Digital Marketing I have completed consisted of 26 modules covering topics such as content creation, measuring web traffic, understanding both SEO and SEM, how to increase a digital presence, and how to plan and execute a great business strategy for an online environment. I had decided to complete this course during the covid-19 lockdown to keep busy but most importantly to ensure the skills I had were continuously practised, developed and improved.

Additionally, the vast experience I have from working within the hospitality industry has also encouraged a strong ability to read and to communicate with consumers. I can transfer these key skills and use them to my advantage when scouting for and establishing new customer relationships whether that be in person or online. Similarly, I also have had the responsibility of managing groups of agency staff in past employment. As well as this allowing me to practise leadership qualities and effective communication, it also allowed me to practise dealing with high levels of responsibility under pressure.

On a different note, my determination and passion for success can be seen with various examples throughout my time at university. During my second year, I helped to create a fundraising society in which I was also elected for a role on the committee as 'Social Secretary'. This role included the organisation and the running of fundraising activities as well as establishing strong relationships within the society through 'socials'. Additionally, I also had the responsibility of taking charge of all social media platforms. Having the control of social media was exceptionally important in making sure that all university students were aware of the society and the fundraising events we had organised. After having run various fundraising activities, creating a calendar featuring a range of sport societies (which involved considerable amounts of persistence and organisation), and having won three awards for our efforts, it is clear the society I had helped to create and run has been a huge achievement and has made an impact on the student union.

I was also a member of the University of Kent Women's Hockey Club and played for their third team. My team won the South Eastern division and I believe this was due to the strong team we had developed and from the competitive nature we had ingrained within us. Upon joining the Hockey club, I was aware of the commitment it would take to win our division and my efforts were noticed as I was awarded the 'Most Improved' at the end of season awards ceremony. After graduation, I continued to pursue my interest in Hockey by joining the local club, "Winnington Park Hockey Club", and I currently play for the Ladies 2nd XI team.
