About me

My name is John Quintero and the position of picture editor is of great interest to me.

I am a photographer with more than 15 years of experience; I worked for BBC for 4 years as picture editor and photographer and previously for Viasat Broadcasting UK, also as picture editor and photographer.

In my last position as picture editor for BBC iPlayer, I was responsible for sourcing and editing images for BBC ONE, TWO, BBC NEWS, BBC Parliament, CBBC and CBEBBIES.

During the last 3 years within the BBC I was responsible for:

-Editing images to a high standard using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop

-Maintaining the brand integrity of BBC channels in a multiplatform, digital environment as well as in printing.

-Developing excellent relationships with image agencies, photographers and BBC image archives.

-Managing a vast image database to store, recall and publish images from.

-Complying images for legal, editorial and quality purposes.

-I am fully aware of the intricacy of legal issues involving copyright, licensing and usage as well as ethical and sensitive considerations across different platforms.

-I understand the value of excellent metadata and asset management. I know the conventions to keep a digital image library well organized and easily accessible for all users.

As the Picture Editor for Viasat Broadcasting, I was the main point of contact for all picture enquiries and managed a picture library that provided the publicity imagery for all the TV stations owned by Viasat Scandinavia. I was responsible for sourcing, editing and sending images for publication in magazines, newspapers and on the web in 30 different countries.

- Responsible for contacting image agencies, TV producers and films distributors in different countries to source all kind of images.

- Ensuring the rights for publication were negotiated to meet business and creative needs.

-Responsible for high quality graphics for advertorial articles, posters and general publicity where colour accuracy and quality were vital.

As a photographer myself, I use Photoshop and Lightroom to edit my images almost on a daily basis. I have been using Lightroom since the first beta version was launched back on 2006.

I know what makes an image strong, what is suitable for printing or online publication, what could work in a magazine but perhaps not on a mobile device.

I am passionate about photography and with the years of experience taking photographs I know what subjects could work in an article and how an image can work only by cropping it in a different way.

My photographs have been published in several newspapers, magazines and online around the world.
