The Express's digital newsdesk is looking for a World News Editor. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a vital role within our newsroom. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in digital journalism at delivering brilliant exclusives and fantastic page views in equal measure.

Reporting to the Head of News, you will be full of ideas for agenda-setting stories and instinctively know how to drive the key stories forward and how to drive readers to our stories. You will be equally adept at covering everything from the war in Ukraine to over-tourism in Tenerife - all in a way that differentiates us from our rivals.

You will have newsdesk experience on a national website or paper, agency or a busy regional title and have strong organisational and people skills. A deep knowledge of and passion for world affairs are absolutely essential.

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

What will the role involve?

  • Work with the newsdesk and reporters to generate traffic-driving ideas and exclusives
  • Help manage a team of reporters to cover the stories that matter - from breaking news to investigations and features
  • Find and develop stories that will appeal to Express readers
  • Liaise with freelance reporters across the globe to establish a network of contributors
  • Understand audience analytics and the use of stats to dictate how we headline stories and how we shape newslists
  • Balance the biggest hard news stories of each day with lighter trivia pieces and features which will generate a large audience at weekends and on quiet news days
  • Be willing to work evenings, weekends and overnight shifts when required
  • Work with colleagues on print to ensure we have the best possible coverage across all platforms
  • Edit and manage copy to tight deadlines ensuring accuracy

Qualifications:

Who are we looking for?

  • NCTJ or equivalent journalism degree and knowledge of media law
  • Have a strong understanding of the unique nature of digital news
  • An excellent knowledge of world affairs and a passion for global news
  • Have an eye for detail to bring stories to life
  • Know how to manage and inspire a team
  • Be a good motivator
  • Have excellent contacts
  • Be able to work calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Have excellent legal and IPSO knowledge
  • Knowledge of foreign languages is an advantage
