For over 175 years our brands and imprints have been a trusted source of knowledge to these communities and today, more than ever, we see it as our responsibility to ensure that fundamental knowledge can be found, verified, understood and used by our communities – enabling them to improve outcomes, make progress, and benefit the generations that follow.

About the Brand:

Nature Portfolio is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Springer Nature is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and flexible art editor to work on the world-leading Nature Reviews series of STM journals. The Nature Reviews portfolio includes Life, Clinical, Physical and Social Sciences titles. The successful candidate will work within a team of art editors and editors that produce scientific illustrations for a selection of these Nature Reviews journals. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

The role will require the creation of scientifically accurate figures for articles, as well as decorative illustrations for the journal, in accordance with our recognisable house style:

  • Scientific illustrations are created in Adobe Illustrator following house style, using sketches and roughs provided by the authors and editors as a guide.
  • Creation of illustrated monthly covers, and web homepage imagery.
  • Re-styling data graphics, such as graphs, maps, timelines and flow diagrams in house style.
  • Art working and retouching, setting and labelling of photographs and data renders.
  • Illustrations for editorially written articles, and picture research if photographs are needed.
  • Hands-on management and organisation of workloads in order to meet press deadlines.
  • Occasional poster and infographic design.
  • Follow workflows, guidelines and procedures to ensure efficient turnarounds of work across departments.

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • Proficient in using Adobe Illustrator. Experience using Adobe Photoshop also preferred.
  • Demonstrable artistic and creative flair
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven team environment

Desirable:

  • BA Honours in Graphic Design (illustration) [or equivalent]
