About me
I am a freelance writer, based in London, producing high-quality, engaging and distinctive content, features and copy as well as editing, proofreading and engagement strategy.
Despite having wanted to write since I was a child, I started my career as a temp in the communications department of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and accidentally remained in the Civil Service for nine years.
I wrote many reports and documents during my Civil Service career, but rediscovered my love for the more creative side of writing during the 2012 Olympics, when I began to write a blog about my attempts to try all the Olympic disciplines. The blog was a great success, garnering international media coverage and securing representation by top literary agents, Luigi Bonomi Associates.
I have been writing on a freelance basis since then about sports, fitness, lifestyle and travel, for a range of publications and brands, including a weekly column for The Offside Rule (We Get It!) and a fortnightly column for Standard Issue Magazine. I plan and produce content for Vevie Active Sportswear, Bikmo Plus and Bella Velo, to whom I also provide advice and support on digital comms and media outreach, on an ongoing basis. I have experience using picture editing programmes, content management systems (CMS) and understand the principles of search engine optimisation (SEO), to ensure breadth of reach.
I performed a range of duties in the Civil Service in DEFRA and latterly, The Department of Energy and Climate Change. During my time in the Civil Service my roles were primarily focussed around development and implementation of consumer utilities policy, and communication. My first role was responding to enquiries by members of the public, before working my way up to the dizzy heights of drafting responses to Parliamentary Questions and briefing ministers ahead of monthly departmental questions in the Houses of Parliament and eventually moving over to policy focussed roles. I also worked on an award winning independent review of fuel poverty, contributing to what has been described as the most comprehensive review of the health and social impacts of fuel poverty, to date.
