About me

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to apply for the Junior Designer position at your company.

I am a graduate in Graphic Design currently working at Paper Dove, a greetings card company in Northumberland. I studied for my degree at Northumbria University, specialising in publication design and graduating in 2013.

For the past year I have been working as a Letterpress Printer at Paper Dove. Working for the company has been a valuable experience. I have qualified as a Letterpress Printer, a skill that is becoming obsolete in the modern world and have had a clear insight into how the industry works. However, in order to progress my career, I need more scope to demonstrate and use my creative abilities by returning to my roots of design and typography.

I believe I would be the ideal candidate to fill this vacancy as whilst at university I specialized in publication design with an emphasis on typography. This lead me to my current job in letterpress as it focuses on the basics of type setting and the required meticulous attention to detail. I have a keen interest in following the latest trends in the design industry and I feel I could contribute with original concepts and ideas.

In a previous placement at The Northern Block Font Foundry, I had the responsibility of designing the online and printed publicity for the newly designed typefaces. This included formatting and uploading designs to Myfonts and Behance. I designed the first printed specimen book for the foundry, which displayed the Uninsta typeface. This was sent out to local design agencies and can also be ordered from the Northern Block website. Selected images can be seen in my attached portfolio. Within this role I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign on a daily basis.

As I am the sole printer at Paper Dove I have to be very organised. I manage the print room, which includes organising the print and maintenance schedule. My responsibilities also include communicating with the designers on a day-to-day basis concerning a number of design related issues and the production manager on print deadlines. My training in Letterpress and typography has taught me the importance of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail needed in design. I am used to working under a great deal of pressure, working to strict deadlines and having to problem solve daily.

I would be very grateful if you could spend some time looking through my portfolio. I hope you find it of interest and would be obliged if you would consider me for the Junior Designer position or would keep me in mind for any future openings. If you would like to meet in person please do not hesitate to contact me.

With kind regards,

Jennifer Harland
