About me
My name is James Thursby and Currently in my year of Industrial Design at Auburn University. I am from North Attleboro Massachusetts, a small suburb 40 minutes south of Boston. The proximity to Boston exposed me to history and culture while also fulfilling my love of sports. Therefore, when I was looking for design schools Auburn University was at the top of my list because of the outstanding design program, coupled with having great college sports. The completion of my second year of industrial design studies solidified my love for design. It does not matter if it is the research in what is on the market already, ideation through sketches, quick modeling, or 3D modeling I have a passion to be good in every aspect of design. Design combines elegant forms while including functional aesthetics in all products. This is why I love Footwear design, it gives the opportunity to bring forms together with comfort to create something beautiful.
There are many things that got me into Industrial design, the first of these being the chance to make a difference, not only with the products that go to market but, in the way that things are thought about. In design there are opportunities to create ideas in ways that are not always the norm. Sketch ideating offers a stream of consciousness allowing a variety of different thoughts from a team working on solving a problem and it is unlike any other way of thinking normally done.
My love of sketching is the second factor that drew me to Industrial Design. As a high school student, I was in the fine arts homeroom and was able to begin each day sketching. However, it felt like more of a hobby than a career path. Then I did an Industrial Design summer program at Rhode Island School of Design, RISD. It was a perfect combination of fine arts and problem-solving skills to make changes on current designs.
After learning about color theory at Auburn I developed a real passion for the way that your eye is affected and drawn to something just by the combinations of color on packages around a store. My education at Auburn has introduced me to many interesting parts of design from Synthesis of Drawing, Prototyping Fabrication, Two-Dimensional Industrial Design Principles, Computer and Design Communications, Three-Dimensional Industrial Design Principles, and Anthropometry. Each of these classes has taught me something different about design that I can apply to my future in design.
