About me

I came late to Graphic Design - at least as a profession - graduating from University in 2006 with a degree in History and Philosophy, I then gained an NCTJ post-graduate diploma in Magazine Journalism, and embarked on various post-university jobs in PR and Marketing around Brighton and London.

Typography and design had always been a hobby, until I began working at IPC Media as a Picture Researcher for various publications, and I was exposed first-hand to the work of the designers there. I re-trained at Shillington College in 2011 and gained a diploma in Graphic Design.

I began working as a freelancer, before I was hired by Las Iguanas - a Latin-themed restaurant chain - as their sole designer. In that role over the last three years, I've overseen a company-wide rebrand, following which, the company has won 'Coolest Brand' at the Peach Report Awards two years in a row - beating out competition from the likes of Jamie's Italian, Yo Sushi and Wagamama's.

As the company has grown substantially in that time from 25 to 40 sites around the UK, my role has also expanded. I design logos, menus, publications, packaging and posters. I've designed a coffee table book, as well as packaging for various associated products which will soon be sold in supermarkets. I design advertising for all the yearly campaigns, regularly art direct photo shoots, and oversee the design of restaurant interiors to ensure brand-consistency.

Through this varied role, I have gained a lot of experience both creating and maintaining consistent brand guidelines at all levels, and across all media. As well as affording me the opportunity to work within a broad range of creative areas, this role has taught me to work extremely quickly, efficiently and with a high level of accuracy usually against tight deadlines. I frequently take my work from conceptual design to finished article and handle all print production, creating and checking all files as the sole liaison for the printers.

Coming from an eclectic background of academic and creative courses and similarly varied job roles, I've gained a unique perspective on the nature of design. I've been a client, a consumer and also a creative director, and have subsequently acquired a unique understanding of print design, and of my role as a Graphic Designer, working within it. I believe that good design grabs the reader's attention because its beautiful, but holds that attention through its simplicity and functionality.
