About me

Having worked full time for two major UK newspapers (The Daily Mail, 11 years and The Economist, 3 years) I have plenty of experience taking a complexed brief to create infographics at the highest level.

I have the ability to turn statistical components into visually appealing infographics, making dry information into something easy to understand and interesting to view, with complete accuracy. I highlight key points with the use of relevant graphical representations and use an intuitive layout to convey the factual information in a logical and exciting manner.

I specialise in Information Graphics such as data visualisation, diagrams, charts and maps however having spent fifteen years in newspapers I can do more than just that.

What I bring is the ability to create strong graphics which are both clear and informative for the broadest of audiences.

I am in your or near your time-zone and can start work straight away on a given project. If you need something quickly I can get that done too. I am certainly in the market for long term work.

I can certainly, as well as infographics, graphs and data design, do layouts and icons Indeed I already do for a Texas firm called Symplr.

I have in my view a modern style and I am always looking at the latest trends in graphic. As a member of the Society of News Design (SND) I am a member of a wider community of graphic artists who like to keep up with what the others are up to.

I have very strong graphic design skills taking designs from rough concepts all the way through to a final piece of work using the clients requirements.

I worked for a UK national newspaper for eleven years where only the best work was accepted by the editor. It was a prerequisite to effectively conceptualize, design and create high-quality visuals in an infographic format.

I worked with the best team of graphic designers on Fleet Street both giving and taking constructive feedback.

As to my qualifications I hold an HND in Information graphics and news design. As stated above I have worked with the Daily Mail as senior Graphic Artist often as Graphics Editor of the day. Before that I worked for a year with BusinessAM a now sadly defunct Scottish business daily newspaper.

My first Job was three years working for international business and political newspaper The Economist as Senior Graphic Artist including a three month stint as Graphics Editor. You will see examples of data visualisation in both the links above and attached files. During my time in newspapers and during my freelance time I have worked on a whole host of science graphics and data graphics.

I worked with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign working with colour, illustrations, photographs and icons. Please check out my portfolio, links above, for a whole range of my work from The Daily Mail and freelance.

I have vast experience boiling down abstract and raw information concepts into visual work.

I am adaptable and flexible. Believe me there are no greater stressful situations than working for a newspaper where every day brings different jobs all which must be complete well before first print deadline. I am as I say above used to working with a team and have had lots of work related Skype calls and conference calls during my time.

A little more about me:

I have 24 years' experience, including 15 years working as senior infographic designer for national and international newspapers including The Daily Mail (11 years) and The Economist (3 years) in London. I moved in 2013 to Germany to be with my wife and children. Since then I have been full-time freelancer specialising in infographics, diagrams, maps and data visualisation.

I have completed many freelance infographic jobs here on upWork successfully. I have also recently completed an infographic for BAE Systems and others via international Communication firm Golin Harris for Texas Instruments, WorldPay and Flora Margarine.

I am English so naturally I speak perfect English.

All my work is unique.

I really enjoy finding new ways to display information which are clear and informative yet are sometimes within a given style (i.e. in a newspaper, website or magazine etc.), sometimes to my own style.

I am equipped with Adobe CC and MS Office.

I would very much like to talk/message/email further with you about the project.

Kind regards

Ian Dennis
