About me

Self-shooting , self-editing video journalist and documentary filmmaker committed to ethical and engaging storytelling. With my background rooted in anthropology, I specialise in socio-cultural issues, developmental and humanitarian subjects, and in promoting cross-cultural understanding and interest both at home in the UK and abroad. As anthropologists, we strive to explore alternative and varied viewpoints and voices, from a position of humility and open-minded enquiry.

Visual Anthropology is the study of all aspects of the human experience, with a focus on examination of the visual media itself, in terms of politics of the visual, representational ethics and methodologies, as well as analysis of the ways society engages with the visual media. We learn to be sensitive to ethical issues and difficult subject matter, inappropriate power dynamics, and to be wary of tired visual tropes and formats, focusing instead on methods of encouraging real emotional and intellectual engagement directly between viewer and subject, which is particularly useful in the online world of compulsive scrolling and five second attention spans.

The MA in Visual Anthropology and Ethnographic Documentary was intensive and practical, and furnished me with exceptional technical documentary production skills. I gained practical experience in co-ordination of documentary film production in the UK and overseas, which entailed researching into country-specific film production and media laws, and managing all logistical concerns and arrangements whilst on location; a very steep learning curve pushing me to think innovatively and draw upon all possible resources to ensure completion and success of any project.

I worked on all aspects of documentary film production from selecting and in depth researching of subjects of socio-cultural interest exploring all expressions of the human experience, to development and production, usually shooting film and audio single-handedly over an extended period of a few months in the field, to constructing a narrative in the edit, and delivering an excellent standard of documentary film.
