ABOUT

The Gay Games in Hong Kong faced opposition and athletes were withdrawing due to safety concerns, reflecting conservative cultural attitudes prevalent in the region. This presented a challenge for the Games in changing perceptions and promoting inclusivity.
Therefore, the brief is to challenge cultural taboos and showcases the acceptance and warmth of Hong Kong. In order to overcome opposition: Change the negative perception of the Gay Games in Hong Kong by showcasing the city's warmth and inclusivity. Ensure athlete participation: Reassure athletes and the LGBTQ+ community about their safety and create a sense of belonging and support.
The Pride Lions created for the Gay Games in Hong Kong. It aimed to address opposition and change perceptions in a city where conservative attitudes often prevail. The core idea was to strategically adapt the revered tradition of the Lion Dance into "The Pride Lions." These Lions incorporated a Pride rainbow flag, symbolizing diversity and inclusivity. By merging this traditional art form with LGBTQ+ symbolism, the initiative showcased a deep understanding of Hong Kong's cultural heritage and the importance of adapting traditions to promote acceptance.

The Pride Lions sought to challenge stereotypes and highlight acceptance within the local community by featuring a gay couple trained in the Lion Dance.

Additionally, the initiative strategically chose to start the pride lions parade from the Wall Villages, known as the most conservative part of Hong Kong. This decision added cultural significance, acknowledging existing challenges and directly confronting them.
