ABOUT
With almost 15 years’ experience in creating online design education. Since 2011, I’ve been producing tutorials, courses and resources for a global audience of aspiring designers, combining my passion for visual communication with a deep interest in making design education more accessible, practical and inspiring.
Through my YouTube channel, Gareth David Studio, I have built a community of more than 800,000 subscribers, with over 60 million views to date. I also teach on Skillshare, where I create structured design courses for students who want to build confidence with graphic design, layout, typography, software and creative thinking.
This eBook was created as a modern graphic design learning resource for the next generation of designers. After years of teaching online, I wanted to create something that went beyond a traditional PDF or static learning guide. The ambition was to design a highly visual, fully interactive publication that students could carry with them, explore at their own pace, and use as a practical companion while learning the foundations of graphic design.
The eBook brings together design principles, visual examples, project-based learning, interactive navigation and carefully structured educational content. It was designed to feel engaging, contemporary and easy to use, while still offering real depth for learners who are just beginning their design journey.
A key part of the project was the visual design itself. The publication was created to feel more like a crafted design object than a standard educational document. Layout, typography, colour, image treatment, pacing and interaction were all considered carefully to create a fluid digital reading experience. The result is a resource that feels dynamic, polished and highly visual, while remaining clear, practical and accessible.
The eBook is optimised for iPad, but it also works effectively across laptops, desktops and mobile devices. It is lightweight, portable and easy to navigate, allowing students to learn wherever they are. Interactive elements help guide the reader through the content, making the experience more intuitive and connected than a conventional book format.
The project also involved collaboration with other designers. I reached out to a range of talented creatives and invited them to contribute examples of their work, helping to build a richer and more diverse learning resource. Curating and presenting this work became an important part of the project, allowing the eBook to showcase different creative voices while supporting its wider educational purpose.
At its heart, the eBook is about making graphic design education feel inspiring, useful and relevant. It was created for students, beginners and self-taught designers who want to understand the foundations of graphic design in a way that feels visual, practical and enjoyable.
This is also an ongoing project. As new content, examples and learning material are developed, the eBook can continue to grow over time. Students who access the resource today will be able to benefit from future updates, making it a living design education tool rather than a one-off publication.
The finished eBook represents the intersection of design, education and digital publishing. It is both a learning resource and a showcase of interactive layout design, created to help aspiring designers build knowledge, confidence and creative momentum in a format that feels modern, flexible and ready for the way people learn today.
