About me

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am applying for the junior designer position. I was drawn to the role because of the opportunity to be creative and your flexibility as a design company; and because I feel that my past experience as a theatre designer makes me highly suitable to the role.

My experience is based in theatre design and construction: props, scenery, puppets and costumes. I have a degree in Theatre Design and I have experience designing and managing various projects from theatre to film, styling and events. My technical skills include AutoCAD, Sketchup and Photoshop and InDesign. It is my aim to use these skills and experience and apply them to other design disciplines where they cross over to exhibition and retail design.

My most recent work was with the Nexus Ensemble on The Bacchae, for which I designed and constructed the scenery, costumes and props, and stage managed the show. It required me to be extremely motivated in overcoming the challenges of immersive theatre, and because there was no-one to fill carpentry, finance and stage managing roles, I stepped up to fill these myself. It was one of the best experiences of my career because of this as I acquired many skills outside of my field.

From I was theatre designer for theatre company Actability who work with learning disabled adults around London, Hertfordshire and Essex. With them I designed Dramaquarium, which was aimed at physically disabled children and performed in a swimming pool. For this I constructed puppets and interactive waterproof props to tell the story of The Odyssey, focusing on the children's senses, engagement and response. I found this both challenging and fascinating as I had to be highly adaptable to the audience and the spectrum of disabilities they presented.

Another Actability project Tree Tales told stories from around the world using physical theatre, dance, shadow and rod puppetry. I designed and made the set and puppets, organised all of the visual aspects and stage managed the touring production. It was rewarding to develop something together that was innovative and unconventional.

My other experience includes designing for Immersive productions and events including RIFT's Macbeth, Ignite's 1-2-3 Ignite! Pop Up Shop and Phakama's Trashcatcher's Ball.

I have designed and constructed scenery for productions including Kentwell's Victorian Music Hall, Black Box Theatre's Great Expectations and Hackney Shed's All That Glitters. I designed and made puppets and props on Dragonbreath's Gullivers' travels and Polymath Picture's Hand Up If You're Lost music video.

I have also been involved in designing, making and styling for commercial and event design with The Daily Star, Smirnoff and McCoys.

I am very excited to learn more about this opportunity and to discuss further what I can do for Roar. Thank you for taking the time to consider this application and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours Sincerely,

Emma Terrell
