About me

To Whom It May Concern

I am writing to you to apply for a position within the design team. I graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Sports Journalism from the University for the Creative Arts in 2015, the highest ranking arts university in the UK. During my time at university, I developed my skills as a journalist and a reporter, and found a passion for the design side of the industry. As an arts university, my course pushed its students towards focusing heavily on graphic design more than other universities may have done, with the assessment criteria levelling the production quality of submitted work equal to the content within. This allowed me to enhance my skills in this area and increase my knowledge and skill of design work.

Throughout my three years at UCA, I undertook a number of projects that all required very contrasting design concepts. In my first year I created two magazine issues focused on video gaming as well as a short sports newspaper based on the style of The Times newspaper featuring reports from all four of England's top leagues. In my third year, my final project was to create from scratch a 40 page sport based magazine, taking inspiration a number of publications to create a magazine called Sport Happens, which I designed from start to finish single-handedly. While creating this project, I became more aware of many aspects of designing a major project such as this, such as the consistency required from the first to last page and the level of detail needed to maintain this.

During my time at Greenways Publishing, I have worked on the five sports-based newspapers that they create within the company. While working in a team of four designers and reporting to the Art Editor, I was given the responsibility of assisting the design work of The Rugby Paper, as well as helping with The Non-League Paper, Football League Paper, Cricket Paper and Golf Paper, as well as the design work for Late Tackle and Racing Ahead magazines. This role has expanded my knowledge and skillset in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, as well as Quark Xpress.

While I am still relatively new to the publishing industry, I am confident that I am the perfect applicant for a design role within your team, and can bring a keen eye for detail and a motivated attitude to your company.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss my application further.

Yours Sincerely,

Chris Williams
