About me
Ambitious, curious and dedicated MA graduate with a belief in embracing creativity, a keen eye for detail, exceptional communication skills, solid interest in global politics and an obsessive passion for books.
I am a recent MA graduate in Gender and Media at the University of Sussex. Throughout the course I took modules in 'Gender & Representation', 'Gender, Sexuality & Digital Culture', Activist Media Practice' and 'Media, Culture & Communication'. From within these modules I have developed experience in audio and visual recording and editing, research methods, a detailed understanding of gender and query theory relating to media and new media, writing, project planning, algorithms and copy-editing. During my time I have written papers on online transgender counterpublics, radical evasion methods of surveillance on Instagram, traditional and digital distribution methods for feminist activism and using queer crowdsourcing on social media during Covid-19. I also have a paper currently under peer review for publication which explores the representation of voguing in Ryan Murphy's TV series Pose.
My previous academic achievements contain a PGCE from Oxford University and a BA in English from the University of Sussex. For my undergraduate dissertation I researched the representation of American satirical news in a post-ironic 21st century.
In my current role as Copy Editor for the publication Feminist Encounters: A Journal of Critical Studies in Culture I work collaboratively and independently copy-editing articles for an international peer-reviewed academic journal with a focus on intersectional feminism. My primary roles include proofing submissions and editing for English language fluency, spelling, grammar and narrative structure in line with the house style. In addition, I write book reviews and provide critical notes to authors.
Alongside my role as Copy Editor I also have the privilege of being the Art Installation Liaison Officer at End of the Road Festival. This role involves project managing the festival's art installation, coordinating with exhibiting artists, guiding the production team and décor staff to produce, install and manage art installations across the festival. I also have experience preparing artists and the production team for interviews with the BBC.
My prior work experience is primarily in the education sector where I worked as a secondary school English teacher in the UK and as a volunteer teacher in Northern Thailand. As a secondary school teacher, I taught English language, literature and creative writing and editing to KS3 and KS4 students. Additionally, I ran the Red Box Project for the school in an effort to fight period poverty, a prevalent issue facing many of our students and executed whole staff training on storytelling, promoting a love of reading amongst students and using images for teaching critical thinking. Managing multiple workloads and teaching a vast range of ages enabled me to develop skills to help me prioritise, manage and complete projects within tight deadlines.
I am also the editor and producer for an intersectional feminist activist project called 'A Call to Vulvas' which aims to call out MPs' attitudes and voting records towards gendered equality and health in order to implement political change in policies that work to disadvantage large sections of our community. In a similar vein, I am lucky enough to be a featuring writing for The Peach Diaries, a periodical that discusses issues facing women such as sexual consent, contraception and menstruation.
Finally, the separation caused by Covid-19 and my passion for stories and story-telling has inspired me to experiment with the traditional art of oral story-telling. I have begun producing a podcast based around themed personal stories of people I have met over the years, some of whom I know intimately and others not. I am excited to see where it goes.
