About me

In over 25 years working in graphic design I have specialised in editorial & information design - in print and online. My work and skill-set has greatly benefited from a wide variety of projects and clients. I have worked in the education, charity, travel and art sectors (including architecture) and most recently the engineering sector with Network Rail. I understand the benefits and importance of creative leadership, backed-up with strong ideas.

I am experienced in all aspects of the production process and as a creative lead have managed department/studio budgets, external agencies and the creative output of freelance and in-house creatives (including editorial, developers, photographers and illustrators). The wide variety of clients I have worked with has been challenging having placed great demands on me as both a verbal and visual communicator. This experience has strengthened my ability to communicate design issues to clients, managers and designers - in a considered and succinct way.

I have a proven track record as a leader. I am capable of working alone, or as part of a team, from brief to delivery. I was the sole provider of all visual requirements at Network Rail's projects in the Thames Valley Area - an extremely fast-paced and demanding role. A competent photographer - it was significant part of my work at Network Rail - shooting works on track and portraiture for publicity.

Previous to this position I established a design department at Wexas Travel. During which time the company evolved from a high street travel company to a luxury travel concierge. The design team played a crucial role in this process, rebranding the company identity and designing and producing all of its online and print matter, including brochures books and a quarterly magazine.

I have set-up and managed [in-post] three design studios, Junius Publications, cScape Ltd and YMCA England. I have art directed the redesign of numerous magazines and websites and developed the brand identity of many companies and institutions.

Contrary to popular belief, good design is about good leadership and that is primarily about building relationships (internally and externally).

Away from the design studio I have organised design related conferences and I write for industry magazines and Journals. I have also lectured at the University of East London and Plymouth University to undergraduate and post-graduate degree level students (Journalism and the Creative Industries).

Technically I am expert in industry standard Adobe Creative Suite programmes, and competent to excellent in the standard Microsoft programmes. I have won a number of design awards and have an MA in Design Writing and Criticism.
