About me
I have a postgraduate diploma in Graphic Design from Central St Martins with a specialism in Typography. I am highly proficient in Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark Express and following a background in magazine publishing, I have most recently been working in publishing on a freelance basis with many of the major publishers, including Penguin Random House, Hachette and Palgrave Macmillan.
On graduation, I moved directly into magazine publishing, starting as a staff designer at music magazine Jockey Slut moving on to Ink Publishing (bespoke travel and b2b publishing) as Art Director. At Art Review, I worked on the redesign of the brand and layouts as well as managing the monthly layouts, website updates, art direction on photo shoots, commissioning illustrators/photographers and the design of marketing material. I understand how to work within a busy department, keep to deadlines, have a keen eye for detail and I enjoy bursting with original creative ideas that will contribute to the visual style of the magazine, while maintaining its high editorial quality.
Since October 2016 I have been working as a freelance designer within in book publishing. Perhaps my most applicable experience is the work I have done at Palgrave Macmillan, where I worked in house on a freelance basis for 10 months. As you will see from my portfolio, I have worked across a diverse range of subject areas from science, psychology and philosophy to critical thinking, sociology and politics. I found it to be a creative environment and was able to produce some truly exciting and conceptual designs within in the field of academic publishing.
In addition to my creative qualifications and experience, I have line manager and commissioning responsibilities. From I was Art Director, in a newly created role, at Quintessence (Quarto Group) where I worked on several international bestselling projects including the 1001 series and Art: The whole story. Aside from overseeing each title's development from the layout, to the book jacket to the index, a significant part of my role was managing employees, freelance and external, and commissioning photographers, illustrators, picture editors and administrating budgets.
As a person I am enthusiastic, outgoing and innovative: all skills that would allow me to contribute much to a design team. As I mentioned previously I specialised in typography in as part of my studies at St Martins and typography remains always the source of inspiration for my work.
