Social Media Hall of Shame: The Fall of Nestle

In the social media sphere the calamities that befall blue chip companies, which in many cases are brought upon themselves, are rarely forgotten, instead they often become immortalised (like in our social media hall of shame).

Food giants Nestle recently came under attack when it was revealed their meat products contained more than just a few traces of horse meat, taking heed from past discrepancies Nestle quickly rectified the situation in a professional and apologetic manner, all's well right
Far from it, the Swiss company's battle against their horse fuelled foods sparked anger across the masses of critics who still hadn't quite got over the great Facebook debacle of 2010.

Like the force, social media can be a powerful ally but you must beware of its dark side. This is the tale of how a big company found itself in the midst of a social media backlash. In the early hours of March 18th 2010, Nestle posted a seemingly harmless post asking their fans to not use altered versions of the Nestle logo as their profile pictures or their comments shall be deleted. This prompted hoards of responses from fans protesting their right to exercise freedom "Don't tell us what to do; you're not the boss of us!"

Surely an employee for one of the largest food corporations on the planet would have replied tactfully and professionally

The problem, obviously, stemmed from Nestlé's response to people who didn't like the initial statement. It's Social Media Marketing 101: don't insult your customers, especially on a platform that was expressly created for the fans of your company! There may be no such thing as bad press but there is such a thing as bad social networking - and this is it.

On that note, we would like to welcome Nestlé's reckless Facebook policing as the lucky number three entrant into our social media hall of shame. Congratulations Nestlé!
