About me
My work is made with Indian ink fine-liner pens, watercolour and gouache on both paper and board. They are characterised by sumptuous cross hatching velvety blacks and rich colour.
Thematically the works look to the idea of exoticism and depict imagery influenced by an interest in primitivism, natural history illustration and modernist abstraction. I am drawn to the thought that we are simultaneously attracted and repulsed by this idea of the exotic.
Much of the source material that the images are taken from has been adapted or embellished in some way. I usually add or remove elements, distort details or juxtapose contrasting images to shift the meanings from that of the original pieces. By deviating from the almost sacred nature of the sources the mood of the works moves between the absurd and something darker.
