About me
Jina Gelder is a Newcastle-born wildlife artist who works primarily with inks and watercolours. She prefers using traditional techniques and loose lively marks to give character and movement to her animal subjects. Previously, Jina has focused primarily on British Wildlife but aims to expand her portfolio to include other world wildlife and is always ready for a new challenge.
Jina graduated university in 2011 where she studied illustration. She originally started selling her work at craft fairs in December 2011 and came to the gallery in early 2012. She works full time as an illustrator, working on pet commissions and her wildlife art. She was honoured to be a finalist in the BBC British Wildlife Artist of the Year 2012 and Jina one day aspires to illustrate and publish her own children's picture books.
'I aim to create a loose and lively style in my work using dry brushing as the basis for my art. I love to study animals and birds out and about in the countryside and love to escape up the Northumberland coast or the Lake Distract with a camera. I am interested in colour and like to explore the use of this in my work. I try and keep the marks and tones expressive and vivid to imbue as much life in my work as possible.'
