ABOUT

My Final project of my MA. ‘It hurts more than just me’ discusses the stigmatisation of the label autism and its implications on societal inclusivity. This project is very personal to me as my older brother has autism, and myself and my family face these feelings of societal exclusion daily.

The film shows the emotional impacts on families within the autism community when they experience this exclusion within society. Societal exclusion can be something as small as a whisper, or a pointed finger, but the emotional impacts that leaves on such families is permanent. Within the film I wanted to express how autism families, in this case my own, are just like any other. We have cups of tea, we go out to the shops and we sit and watch TV. These 'normal' situations happen in our household, just like they do in yours. I aim to question the viewer: Why does our family, like many others within the autism community, face such negativity within society, when we are just like you?
