ABOUT
The brief was issued by our client, the Waste and Resources Action programme, reflecting their drive around ‘The UK Plastics Pact’.
The UK Plastics Pact brings together businesses from across the entire plastics value chain with UK governments and NGOs to tackle the scourge of plastic waste. WRAP is creating a circular economy for plastics, capturing their value by keeping them in the economy and out of the natural environment.
Pact members will eliminate problematic plastics reducing the total amount of packaging on supermarket shelves, stimulate innovation and new business models and help build a stronger recycling system in the UK. Together we will ensure that plastic packaging is designed so it can be easily recycled and made into new products and packaging and, with the support of governments, ensure consistent UK recycling is met.
The UK Plastics Pact annual report from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) summarises the data and progress made towards the four Pact targets, showcasing selected members' progress with examples. It looks at the wider context of the plastic waste crisis and areas where improvements and action are needed as well as celebrating successes.
Mediums:
A clear, concise, and visually engaging report that will be viewed by multiple audiences, plus animations and motion graphics to bring advocate and support endorsement videos to life.
Concept:
The document acts as an important reference point for different audience groups looking to understand the full picture of progress towards tackling the issue of plastic waste in the UK. And as the UK is the frontrunner and was the first Pact internationally, other Pacts around the world look to the UK for guidance and inspiration. The report and surrounding communications therefore needed to work for various stakeholders around the world
Outputs needed to be a clear, concise, and visually engaging report that will be viewed by multiple audiences. The importance of accessible design, clear sections, flow, headings, pull quotes/stats and a navigable structure are important to ensure it worked for people whose first language is not English. Or for people who are time poor and who may just skim the document to find what they need.
Execution:
The new report needed to:
1. To advocate for WRAP’s voluntary agreement product
2. To showcase the best of the pact’s members progress to help gain a greater level of buy-in from senior decision makers in the process and direction of travel.
3. Give clear direction to Pact members and wider stakeholders (e.g., Government) on areas for improvement/where urgent action is necessary.
We moved through a four-stage development process for the development of the main report. This began with concepting, conscious that where we finished would need to work successfully not just for the report itself but also for a series of support videos with numerous partners within the pact that were used to promote the principles of the programme. Concepts had to work both for the report itself but also reflect the design principles and guidance of the overall Pact itself.
Once concepting was agreed we moved through three further stages of application, feedback and refinement around the main report, with the final product being an interactive pdf that allowed users to proactively navigate around the report document as well as link to other sources of information about the programme.
The overall concept was then further developed into a series of motion graphic led templates and idents, that were used with filmed video of Pact members from industry describing their involvement with the Pact, and why it really matters.
The final outputs were a clear, concise, and visually engaging report that will be viewed by multiple audiences, plus animations and motion graphics to bring advocate and support endorsement videos to life.
Results:
The final report was delivered in November 2022 in order to be ready for COP 27
