ABOUT

Whistlejacket began by working with the brand team and senior management at Comic Relief to develop a new Purpose for the organisation, to complement its mission statement. This Purpose statement was expressed as:
 
Engage, Entertain, Accelerate Change
 
Once the Trustees had approved this idea, the organisation began a programme with Whistlejacket to examine all its activity, to ensure it reflected this overall purpose.
 
The first creative step was the development of a new organising identity for both Comic Relief and also for the next big event, Red Nose Day 2019. There were a number of challenges that the new identities needed to meet. For example Comic Relief wanted an identity that was strong enough to allow the organisation to move from being thought of as a year-round charity, rather than just a once-year event; Both marks needed to work independently of each other, giving each an established identity, and also when relevant to be able to work together. And both marks needed to be flexible enough to be used by multiple creative partners, such as the in house design team at Comic Relief, the charity’s commercial sponsors, other charities that worked in partnership with Comic Relief, agency partners across the Comic Relief portfolio, and media & broadcast organisations such as the BBC.

We assembled a multidisciplinary team comprising graphics, graffiti artists, digital & 3D designers and copywriters. The teams worked in fast delivery hothouse sessions, with the Comic Relief team invited to creative reviews and seeing all work as it was developed. We moved through a series of stages of creative development, beginning with wide ranging creative concepting, from which favourite potential routes were selected. We then proceeded through design development and refinement, selecting preferred ideas at each stage, before taking the finally agreed route and demonstrating how it could be applied to a wide variety of mediums, covering graphic design, 3 Dimensional design and digital design, as well as suitability for broadcast.
