ABOUT
In these stress-filled fast-paced times when so many of us live in cities, a patch of green is a highly desirable space – ‘the room outside’ – and although we know it needs mowing, it also needs seeding and feeding. What happens though when your lawn is not big enough for garden machinery and you don’t have time to tend to it? Westland challenged us to come up with an easy hand-held system for people to take care of their lawns that banished all the perceived complexity of lawn care.
The guys on the Webb deVlam team did extensive research – in this case they literally rolled their sleeves up and got their hands dirty. After many hours out in the field studying flow rate according to granule size and shape, walking pace, and the aperture of the spreader nozzle, the team returned to the studio to analyse the data, “we were really making a science out of it,” says Senior Designer Mark Armstrong. When Mark came up with the ball structure for even dispersal, it was inspired by a waterfall near to his Welsh home where the water pours onto a rock and is dispersed quite evenly over the sides. His hypothesis that this would work as a mechanism for Even-Flo was right on target – Westland were keen to get to market and with a patent for this unique design which allows fuss-free alternation between different Westland products. Not only was the conundrum regarding even spread resolved but the removable handle that doubles as the nozzle can be reused. Once a bottle is finished, it can be recycled while the handle is locked and loaded onto a new one from any of the products from the range.
