ABOUT
The purpose of this project was to lighten the burden of water collection for women in the developing world by instigating a campaign which encourages men to share the responsibility; focusing primarily on
Sub-Saharan Africa.
My contacts at the UN and the World bank both explained to me that basic foreign aid has it’s limits. So I tried to think of a more long-term solution to the problem. I believe “Values shape human progress” and for this reason I decided to target the gender gap.
All the research I carried out suggested the same thing; when women gain equal rights to men development is transformed. For example, educated girls have better opportunities to earn higher wages and to participate in community life and in decision making.
The campaign takes the form of “painted houses”, a prolific channel of communication used by brands across Africa. These brightly painted houses, brandishing slogans and logos saturate almost every single community.
The style of the murals I have designed take influence from emotive propaganda and Sub-Saharan painting styles in order to “engage local communities and nestle [itself] within the social and ecological landscapes.”
