ABOUT

OMGYES approached BUCK wanting to create animations for their website so they could get better commercial partnerships with brands that could not commit to explicit footage. After a chat, BUCK suggested something even better: a new illustration and animation system that would work as a rebrand and also allow them to roll out a maximum amount of images and animations.

When we set ourselves to work on the guidelines we agreed on three main pillars guiding us through: keep it instructional and simple, make it sexy and approachable and create diversity.

It’s not often that you have an opportunity to engage on a project that makes an actual difference in society and improve sexual education all around via an accessible platform. We knew we had the opportunity to promote change.

Together, we set a couple of different parameters to combine in order to achieve more diverse and relatable drawings. Playing too safe by keeping characters generic, neutral and "average" is not what we're striving for. There were different models of 3 categories to be combined in order to achieve real diversity: genitalia, body type and skin tone.

On top of that, we also used colors to demonstrate pressure, speed and movement direction. That design language choice combined with the simple yet elegant line drawing and borderless images made sure the educational aspect of it was not lost. Even details such as pubic hair were thought thoroughly.

When it comes to animation, we combined both Cel and After Effects to make sure it would be possible to translate the needed detail to every technique, since movement, speed and direction are crucial to getting the information across. All the movements had to feel natural and organic and at the same time be elegant and precise.

The work is slowly being rolled out but it’s gratifying to see the impact first on the team that worked on it, with many internal conversations throughout the process to make sure we were being fair to the purpose of the project.
There’s definitely a feeling of accomplishment of the three initial pillars we set ourselves to achieve and the expectation of knowing women and everyone else will be able to not only benefit from valuable information but also to see themselves and identify with the images.
