Victoria Sage - Artist Statement

The foundations of my work is my love of observational drawing and so as I love spending most my time out in the countryside it is no surprise that a lot of my drawing is of the natural world. As a child growing up in the suburbs in Oxford I was lucky enough to have a national park reserve at the back of my garden and so a short walk to explore the magic of the woods was an everyday occurrence

As I grew up and journeyed on with my education in art and design printing became a new found love and a brilliant way of transforming my drawings into something more special and exciting as well as unique. Rubber stamps have probably been the most fun to learn to do and develop further with and so always makes an appearance in my work.

I am a moth to a lamp when pattern is in my environment and especially pattern that is used for wallpaper design. It is this strong interest in wallpaper design that has made me want to explore making my own, this has meant most of my work always heads in the direction to be used as a surface design of some sorts.

My main influences are of course the natural world and all its intriguing creatures and species of plant life, but my all time favourite craft artist is William Morris and so his work has always played a huge part in my work when it comes to inspiration.

If I were to describe my body of work I would say it has the same verity as the environment it has been influenced by. I do a lot of mixed media work mostly with paper and fabric and so my work has some depth of texture entwined within the pattern design. But I love to explore and so I am always trying new things with my work and so with that I always keep an open mind when it comes to my next body of work or project.
