ABOUT

Poster to celebrate the centenary of icon of flamenco (and Spain!) Lola Flores.

For:
Lola Flores Centenary 2023
Congress at Universidad de Cadiz – One hundred years of an icon of Spanish culture.

________

Lola Flores is an icon of flamenco, an icon of her home city of Jerez de la Frontera, and 2023 would have been her centenary. Her influence extends far beyond Spain and her hometown of Jerez however, to Latin America (Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and beyond!) and also the US – from the 1940s and 50s she travelled and starred in many films abroad, performing concerts and tours. And today her image and influence has spread increasingly further afield.

To make the connection between Jerez and the rest of the world, I created a collage from old maps from the era of her birth and the eras when she travelled to Hollywood, Broadway, Havana, Buenos Aires, Mexico and more, to create the shape of her iconic image bold stare, beauty spot and curl of hair (an iconic image that has given her a status bordering on that of Frida Khalo in Spain.) Its amazing how an old railway line doubles as waves of hair or laughter lines!

This poster therefore was designed for the congress to celebrate her local impact and international reach, to further popularise her globally.

Also exhibited in the Artis8 Gallery in Jerez as part of the 'Flamenko Art' show in 2024.
