To explore and celebrate a craft
Concept
I decided to focus my project on Japanese carpentry.
Japanese joinery practices the basics of carpentry. All work is produced by hand supporting the modest views based around the Japanese design style Wabi Sabi. In my research I discovered that a basic knowledge of woodwork is crucial to the correct practice of Japanese carpentry. However the key information needed to understand my chosen craft was difficult to find and was often poorly explained.
Solution
My solution was to re-brand a Japanese carpentry workshop and design a course overview sketchbook to be used alongside the course with the aim of teaching the techniques of an unknown craft to UK carpenters. The brand name was inspired by the existing wood glue No More Nails. Japanese wood joins are made without hardware providing a working solution to carpentry without nails.
The key components to Japanese carpentry are modesty and simplicity, this inspired me to create the booklet with a minimal, flattened style of illustration.
