ABOUT

Godtear was Steamforged’s first own-IP game since Guild Ball, and I wanted to take the opportunity to create something that completely stood out from the crowded miniature game market. Based loosely on MOBA style video games, we decided that each class of champion would be given a bright and distinct class colour, and that these four would be the basis of everything related to them.
Development of the game took place over several years and card design in particular involved a lot of evolution (and several revolutions where we threw away almost everything we had previously made). The key goal was to create a game that was as easy to pick up and play as possible but contained a great deal of depth. We spent a long time on the icon language in particular, ensuring that a great deal of the special rules can be shown with no text at all.
The game boards themselves are something I’m also very proud of - there are a great many hex-based skirmish games at the moment, but very few boards look as exciting as Godtear. The idea of integrating the hex-grid into the landscape itself really helps the game feel naturalistic, as opposed to simply placing a white grid over a nice piece of texture art.
