ABOUT
The purpose of the project was to help Birmingham City University’s Formula Student team
convert from an internal combustion vehicle to an electric vehicle. As the team have a tight
budget and limited knowledge of electric Formula Student vehicles and their regulations,
this process was to be completed over a few years, allowing each aspect of tractive system to
be considered and developed through final year projects. An initial base platform for this
system was taken from a previous university project however the battery cells were degraded, rendering them unusable. This project designed a battery system which
activated this initial circuit. Furthermore, the project considered and met the strict
Formula Student regulations surrounding these battery systems to ensure that the design
could be used when creating the team’s first competing electric vehicle.
