ABOUT

St Andrew’s is a Victorian, Grade II listed church in north London. The Smithy Creative was asked to create a new visual identity to help build awareness, while also acknowledging the church’s historical and cultural significance.

The first challenge was what to call the church. Its official name was St Andrew’s Stoke Newington, but following research in the community, most people considered it to be in Stamford Hill, N16. The Diocese agreed to our new recommendation to include Stamford Hill.

The local area lacked a hub or community centre to bring people together, and St Andrew’s is in a prime position to help. Through workshops and interviews with staff, the idea of Creating Community Together was crafted.

The new identity includes a distinctive N16 to stand out and help locate the church. The clean and modular design is highly flexible, easy to use by volunteers, and uses a colour palette inspired by the murals in the church.

Imagery includes photographs not only of the church building, but, together with our chosen photographer, Clive Mear, we were able to meet people in the community.

The project was launched on the completion of the restoration of the stunning murals and stained glass windows of the church.
