ABOUT
Concept
The Lottery Winners needed a brand identity that captured their essence: an indie pop band from Leigh, Greater Manchester, known for their infectious energy, working-class authenticity, and deep connection with fans. Drawing from Paul Rand’s philosophy that a logo must be a “symbol of goodwill,” the design centered on three core elements: a pair of glasses, daisies, and a vibrant orange palette. The glasses reflected lead singer Thom Rylance’s iconic orange-framed eyewear, a recognizable trait that anchors their stage presence. Daisies symbolized their grounded, relatable nature and tied to their storytelling, evoking simplicity and cheer. The orange palette embodied their bold, optimistic spirit, ensuring emotional resonance. A hand-drawn sans-serif typeface was selected to echo their raw, human quality, aligning with their unpolished charm.
This concept was intentional, rooted in the band’s identity. The glasses provided instant recognition, daisies spoke to their community-driven ethos, and orange set them apart with warmth and vitality. Following logo principles of simplicity and appropriateness, the design aimed to be memorable while authentically representing the band’s message of resilience and connection.
Execution
The logo featured a stylized pair of glasses with a daisy in each lens, rendered in a bold orange hue. The hand-drawn sans-serif typeface, slightly irregular yet legible, formed the band’s name beneath, balancing playfulness with clarity. The daisies were simplified into clean, geometric shapes to ensure scalability, ensuring versatility across applications. The orange palette (hex #FF6200) was complemented by soft whites and charcoal accents for contrast, creating a cohesive system adaptable to album art, merchandise, and digital platforms.
The broader identity extended the motif: daisy patterns adorned gig posters, orange accents defined social media graphics, and the glasses became a standalone emblem for pins and stickers. Every element was designed with a focus on functionality—clear at small sizes, striking in large formats, and evocative of the band’s personality. The hand-drawn typeface reinforced their approachable vibe, making the identity feel like an extension of their music.
Results
Though not selected as the final design, the identity was a success in capturing The Lottery Winners’ spirit. The glasses-daisy logo was instantly recognizable, tying directly to Thom’s persona and the band’s storytelling. The orange palette and daisy motifs resonated with their energetic, community-focused ethos, standing out in the indie scene. Feedback from the band highlighted the design’s authenticity and versatility, noting its potential to connect with fans on merchandise and posters. The process reinforced the value of modern logo design philosophy: a great logo doesn’t just represent—it feels like it belongs. This design, while not the final cut, proved the power of intentional, emotionally driven choices in building a brand that sings.
