The Hideout Maidstone

ABOUT

Fuse Rail are a specialist electrical company who offer a vast range of services within the rail industry. Safety, health, environmental and quality standards lie at the heart of their company ethos, and it’s these core values that inspired this brief.

They approached us with the task of creating a visual campaign that outlined the 10 life-saving rules that employees should follow in order to maintain the highest safety standards. Typically, these rules are presented to rail specialists nationwide in a more formal and serious way, which inspired the idea to create something more approachable and humorous, without distracting from their undeniably important messages.

The concept was to create a comprehensive set of 10 illustrated posters that utilised bold colours and bespoke illustrations to attract more attention than the conventional safety formats. We worked closely with Fuse Rail in order to determine a single object that was most relevant to each of the 10 safety rules. An important consideration for this brief was that we used objects and settings that the employees themselves would recognise and relate to from their own experiences in the job. We created bespoke, hand-drawn illustrations that made good use of white space in order to make these objects the focus point of each design. Subtle shadows and elements that broke through the borders of the posters helped give the designs a degree of movement, and each was supported by a contrasting background that featured other objects or shapes relevant to that design.

Whilst humour became a subtle element in our designs, we were aware of the boundaries with regards to turning these life-saving rules into more fun prints. From a shovel held together with tape to an employee stuck half-way up a pole, we ensured that the message remained the most prominent take-away from the designs.
