The District Cambridge

ABOUT

Urban & Civic, the group responsible for large scale projects such as the Olympic Village at Stratford, required a public consultation event for the pre-application phase of the development of the Waterbeach Barracks and Airfield site, which would present all the work and research into the development to-date, as well as provide a new opportunity for local residents and concerned parties to feedback their views and ideas.

After reviewing hundreds of pages of development framework documents, masterplanning and design visions and 100 day plans, eight key ‘pillars’ emerged which the consultation would need to address, such as transport, housing & development and business & employment. These pillars were applied to a consultation hierarchy, creating eight separate zones with a simple naming device that created ‘A Connected Place’, ‘A Living Place’, ‘A Growing Place’, etc.

The site’s sports hall provided the venue for the consultation, its four badminton courts conveniently marking out the eight zones required for the content. Responding to the constructed nature of the development and the developers’ commitment to using renewable materials, a modular system of three dimensional plywood cubes and cuboids contained boards displaying maps, CGI visuals and information about the development’s aims and proposed solutions.
