ABOUT
Billboard Houses – Coca-Cola’s Humanitarian Initiative in Ecuador
In April 2016, Ecuador was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, one of the worst natural disasters to hit the country in decades. The quake devastated many regions, leaving hundreds of families without homes. In response, Coca-Cola quickly recognized that their advertising investment, though significant, could not address the immediate need for shelter. They decided to take action by repurposing their billboards into emergency housing for those affected.
The concept was simple but impactful: Coca-Cola turned 380 of its billboards into homes. These billboards, which were no longer serving their marketing purpose, were dismantled and converted into over 200 emergency shelters, providing shelter to more than 4,000 people. This initiative not only repurposed physical resources but also used the power of branding for social good, ensuring that the company’s presence was felt in a way that made a difference.
In addition to the shelters, Coca-Cola made a generous $1.5 million donation to support relief efforts in Ecuador, and the company also provided over 721,000 liters of water to those in need. The campaign’s reach was extraordinary, impacting more than 17 million people through various media outlets, and generating significant public engagement, including over 184,000 organic interactions on social platforms.
The project was widely covered in the media, garnering positive attention and support, including partnerships with other brands like AB InBev and Movistar. This humanitarian effort not only helped rebuild lives but also reinforced Coca-Cola’s commitment to using its resources for the greater good.
Overall, Billboard Houses was a creative and practical solution to a pressing problem, demonstrating how brands can shift from advertising to humanitarian work in times of need. The project’s results went beyond just providing shelter—it became a symbol of corporate responsibility, innovation, and community support.
