a) Definition of ‘off-the-wall’ [adjective, adj/noun]
If you describe something as off-the-wall, you mean that it is unusual and rather strange but in an amusing or interesting sort of way. If you say that a person, their ideas or, their treatment of photography is kinda off-the-wall, you are critical of them because you think they are crazy or ‘off one’s rocker’... you are right!
b) Word origin of ‘off-the-wall’
Possibly from the use of the phrase in handball and/or squash to a shot that is unexpected. The ‘unexpected’ does appear in just about all my photographs in some way or other; precipitous waterfall, mannequins suspended above a bric-a-brac shop, the inside of a lighthouse turret etc, etc… all my photographs are back-dropped ‘off-a-wall’…
