ABOUT

This project was also designed for the Student Starpack Packaging Awards. The brief was to find a new use for corrugated card, either designing an entirely new concept or creating a product that would be made from other materials out of corrugated cardboard. My starting point for this project was considering modern day problems and ways in which they could be alleviated. I settled on the idea that a small problem with a big impact was heavy shopping, it is inconvenient for the shopper, inconvenient for the shop as trolleys are often stolen and it damages the environment as people are more likely to take a car or taxi for a distance they could otherwise walk. Until now the only option is to take a "granny shopper" to assist with heavy shopping, I myself own a granny shopper but I do not always have it with me, so I decided this would be the perfect item to redesign in cardboard. The fundamental idea is that it would be a single service, low cost, recyclable shopper that could be purchased at the check out of the shop. After a considerable amount of trial and error I finally engineered a design that was sturdy enough to hold a considerable amount of weight while allowing the wheels to move freely. The aesthetics were based around the load bearing animal the Mongolian yak, which also allowed for a nice play on words (the sack - barrow became yak - barrow) and I designed hoof prints running along the centre to convey a sense of steady movement. I also kept the graphics to a minimum so less ink would be used, keeping the costs as low as possible. I was extremely pleased with the outcome of this project and was delighted to be awarded the 2015 Starpack student packaging commendation award.
