ABOUT

SAUDI ARABIAN PAVILION, EXPO | SHANGHAI (CN) | 2010

1,600sqm flying carpet. Saudi Arabia presented itself with what was probably the most imposing architectural concept at Expo 2010 in Shanghai − a ship’s hull resting on columns with its surface forming an oasis surrounded by palm trees. The visitors inside stood on a conveyor belt that slowly transported them into the main room. It glided around the room and onto a bridge over the 1,600sqm concave projection surface that encompassed the entire floor. The room’s centre and ceiling were covered by an oriental-like mirror mosaic. Compositions of floral forms, oriental patterns and poetic images of Saudi Arabia spread out from the room’s deepest point to fill the floor and walls in their entirety. The reflections from the mirror let the room appear endless. The spectators found themselves in the midst of a sea of continually changing pictures and sounds.
