ABOUT
Created for the Made in the Pewsey Vale Summer Exhibition, this piece embodies the essence of Wiltshire’s quiet majesty — where land, light, and water interlace in moments of stillness.
Artists were invited to submit a 2D artwork that represents Wiltshire — its landscape, identity and spirit — through their own creative lens. The work should reflect a sense of place, belonging, or story connected to the county’s environment and culture.
'Where the Water Holds Its Breath' captures a fleeting pause in nature — the suspended moment between movement and calm, where a heron stands as both witness and participant in the life of Wiltshire’s waterways. The heron, a familiar presence along the Kennet and Avon canal and the flooded meadows of the Pewsey Vale, becomes a symbol of patience, resilience, and reflection.
Rendered in monochrome mixed media, the piece balances realism and dreamlike atmosphere. Light filters through willow branches and rippling reflections, creating a sense of depth and quiet intensity. Every detail — from the shimmer of water to the textured foliage — was developed through layers of ink, graphite, and soft washes, evoking both precision and emotion.
This artwork began as a series of field sketches and photographs taken across the Vale, focusing on how water holds memory — of movement, light and time. The process evolved into a study of contrasts: motion and stillness, wildness and calm. The heron became the anchor point for this dialogue — a reminder that Wiltshire’s beauty lies not just in its open landscapes, but in its intimate, unnoticed corners where nature breathes quietly.
The finished piece invites viewers to slow down and inhabit that stillness — to feel the weight of silence before the heron takes flight. It is a portrait of Wiltshire not through architecture or horizon, but through its living, breathing water — a reflection of place where calm holds power.
