Tamar Reavenall Artist and published illustrator

ABOUT

For Widdle and Grog: The Easter Bonnet Parade, I was responsible for designing the digital front and back covers as well as producing a collection of interior illustrations in coloured pencil.

The project offered an opportunity to merge digital precision with the tactile qualities of traditional media, resulting in a publication that balanced professional finish with artistic warmth.

The process began with preparatory sketches and visual exploration, aimed at capturing both the individuality of the characters and the festive atmosphere of the Easter Bonnet Parade. These concepts were then developed into full coloured pencil artworks, using layered strokes and subtle detailing to create lively, textured illustrations. The traditional medium brought a sense of authenticity and charm that supported the story’s playful narrative.

In contrast, the cover artwork was completed digitally, enabling me to refine layout, adjust colour harmonies, and incorporate text placement for a polished, print-ready design. This dual approach—digital for the covers and traditional for the interior—ensured consistency across the book while highlighting the strengths of each medium.

The finished outcome was a cohesive and engaging children’s book, where the exterior design provided strong visual appeal for readers and the interior illustrations added depth, humour, and personality to the storytelling. By integrating digital design with hand-rendered techniques, I was able to help bring the author’s vision to life and create an accessible, visually engaging experience for its audience.
