Is there a message behind 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968) and A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Steven Spielberg, 2001, based on the concept by Kubrick)?

Could the monoliths be artificial-intelligent machines themselves—seeding the origins of humanity—ultimately leading to the birth of HAL in 2001 and the androids in A.I.?

I designed these AI images in a way to show David with the monoliths - criss-crossing concepts from both movies into a shared universe.
