ABOUT

The Collaboration
The Islay is a natural complement of skills: two independent, founder-led businesses, each a master of their craft, coming together to make something neither could have built alone. Studio Minerva brings brand positioning, storytelling and design; Master of Malt brings the liquid expertise - two parts of a jigsaw that fit with rare ease. It began by accident, at an industry event, with no prior working relationship between the two teams - a chance conversation that revealed an immediate synergy and a shared instinct to build something together. Being founder-led on both sides was the engine of the whole project: the freedom to move at pace, take real risks and decide on a handshake rather than by committee is what carried The Islay from idea to finished product in under a year.

The Brand
Islay holds a particular magic - a place of pilgrimage for whisky lovers, people who fall for it, return to it. The Islay is built on that same devotion, not to any single distillery but to the island as a whole: its history, its landscape, its community and its culture. Where Islay whisky has always been told distillery by distillery, The Islay tells it as one united story, opening the island up to new drinkers as well as the established faithful. It's a celebration of craft with no performative price tag - every cask aged in a single barrel on Islay, unadulterated and true to where it came from. The design is modern, understated and deliberately free of heritage cliché, down to the stone-effect lid that echoes the island's geology.

The Product
The format matches the ambition, and it's unlike anything Master of Malt has made before. Most whisky blends many casks together so every bottle tastes the same; a traditional single cask comes from one barrel only, and once it's gone, it's gone. The Islay reinvents this as a continuous single cask: every bottle is still drawn from a single cask, but when one cask is finished, the brand rolls on to the next - same name, same age statement, same strength. The result is a permanent, always-available brand with the quality and individuality of a single cask, where no two batches are ever quite the same, casks run in series rather than blended in parallel, a perfect echo of the island itself: ever-changing, never the same twice. It's a fully realised brand built with a design studio from the ground up, not another limited, numbered independent bottling.

The Craft
Flavour is shaped by millions of years of the island. Deep beneath Islay, its stones and geology influence the water, which influences the peat, which ultimately influences the liquid and each expression carries a different stone in age order: quartzite for the 30 year old, red sandstone for the 20, basalt for the 16. Every barrel is selected by Sam Simmons for being most true to the place, matured in situ on Islay and brought to strength by slow reduction a two-week process using Islay water that most producers no longer have the time or resources for. There's real variation bottle to bottle, but a distinctive Islay character runs throughout - tropical fruit, minerality, and peat as a backbone. Rather than prescriptive tasting notes, The Islay invites discovery: with no two bottles ever quite the same, what you taste is genuinely your own. That discovery is built into the object itself - the box carries the port coordinates, the gateway to the island, while the bottle carries the distillery's, and every cask is catalogued and traceable via a code on the label.
