ABOUT
Wandle Housing Association, a 50-year-old South London social housing provider managing 7,000 homes was on the precipice of a major structural and cultural transformation. They needed to evolve beyond their traditional identity as a basic landlord to become a strategic "place-shaper," dedicated to building healthy, sustainable communities through employment, education, and environmental development.
The Brief
Rebrand the organisation to reflect a progressive new way of working, positioning Wandle as a consultative expert in community development while navigating internal resistance and deeply entrenched corporate behaviours.
The Strategy: Co-Creation and Cultural Alignment
Through initial conversations with the CEO and Chair, we identified that the biggest hurdle wasn't just establishing a visual identity, it was overcoming institutional resistance to change. To dismantle existing silos and secure universal buy-in, we placed stakeholders directly at the centre of the creative journey.
Empowered Steering Group: We formed a core team of executives, staff members, and residents with the authority to guide the process and sign off on the final brand design.
Inclusive process: Dedicated staff and resident panels were established and briefed on the project's milestones, ensuring their perspectives actively shaped the organisation's new direction.
The Creative Execution
Strategic Workshops: We facilitated deep-dive interviews and interactive sessions with leadership to map the housing sector, define Wandle's future attributes, and establish clear indicators of success.
A Bold Proposition: These workshops assimilated complex goals into a succinct, rallying brand proposition: A groundbreaking community investment social enterprise.
The Brand Manifesto: To ensure the brand lived beyond just a logo, we authored a comprehensive manifesto. This tool translated the new vision, mission, and values into practical behaviours for specific roles, giving customer service, finance, and asset management clear, actionable ways for delivering on the new brand promise.
The Tangible Impact
Dismantled Silos: The inclusive design process proved the value of cross-departmental collaboration, equipping staff to champion the new identity with confidence.
Cross-Sector Recruitment: The elevated, modern positioning empowered Wandle to attract high caliber talent from customer-centric sectors (like John Lewis) to elevate the resident experience.
Measurable Satisfaction: Following the launch, resident groups reported significant year-on-year increases in service quality, while internal surveys revealed record-high staff belief, advocacy, and brand ownership. Wandle's profile and influence was elevated with local government and the brand saw an overall lift in recognition in the communities it works in.
