ABOUT

*Concept*

Have you ever wished your grocery bags would just run themselves home? This project is a playful stop-motion interpretation of that familiar feeling as well as a play on the phrase 'grocery run'. By turning an ordinary paper grocery bag into a determined little character, the animation celebrates the small joys hidden in everyday routines and invites viewers to find humor in the ordinary.

Packed with paper groceries and personality, the character is on a mission to finish its errands as quickly as possible, a humorous nod to a wish we've all had at one time or another.

*Execution*

One of the biggest challenges was finding a way to make a lightweight paper bag convincingly "run" without losing its natural shape. My first approach used a foam core to give the bag structure and attach it to a stop-motion armature, but it proved too heavy to animate. After several rounds of experimentation, I reinforced the bag with repurposed wrapping paper and tissue paper to maintain volume while keeping it lightweight. Hidden magnets inside the bag and on a custom wooden mount created a secure magnetic connection strong enough to support the character throughout the shoot. You can watch the 'making of' video linked via YouTube to see some of this process.

The paper limbs were made magnetic too, allowing each paper arm and leg to be swapped quickly between frames without adhesives. This practical solution preserved the delicate handmade quality of the paper while making the animation process both efficient and precise.

*Results*

'Grocery Run' demonstrates how simple, low-cost materials can become engaging characters capable of telling expressive stories. The film has resonated particularly well on social media, where its short format, handcrafted aesthetic, and playful personality encourage viewers to stop, smile, and share.

More broadly, the project reflects my ongoing creative practice of bringing everyday objects to life through handcrafted stop-motion. By repurposing familiar materials into joyful characters, I hope to encourage people to look at ordinary things with a little more curiosity, imagination, and delight. If 'Grocery Run' makes someone chuckle, see a paper bag differently, or wish their own errands could run themselves, then it's done exactly what it set out to do.
