ABOUT
Launched in 2021, the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC), based at Heriot-Watt University, brings together over 200 partners across academia, industry, government, and communities. Its mission is to accelerate the UK's transition to net zero by driving cross-sector innovation in industrial decarbonisation.
To support this mission, via a competitive tender process, IDRIC set out to create an engaging, interactive online visualisation tool (OVT) that could communicate the complexity and opportunity of decarbonisation across multiple audiences. The goal was to demystify industrial systems and inspire action through learning, collaboration, or policy.
We created a digital canvas that visualises the interconnected components of the UK's industrial ecosystem. This includes green energy infrastructure, industrial plants, ports, towns, transport, and environmental assets. Each element is represented with illustrative clarity and stylistic cohesion, ensuring consistency, instant recognition and intuitive navigation.
The OVT doesn't just meet the brief; it amplifies it by:
Making the industrial decarbonisation system understandable and engaging.
Serving all intended audiences without compromise.
Aligning with IDRIC's brand and research priorities.
Empowering self-guided discovery, policy dialogue, and educational exploration.
Providing a scalable, future-ready platform for long-term use.
The OVT is an impactful execution of what IDRIC set out to achieve and an example of how concept, strategy, and design meet a complex brief with clarity and purpose.
