ABOUT

Fine Art | Textile Painting | East–West Fusion | Degree Show Collection

The Colours Series was created as part of my degree show exhibition, and serves as a visual exploration of cultural diffusion between East and West. The work draws on my long-standing passion for Eastern visual arts, with an emphasis on pattern, colour, and symbolic materials.

At its heart, this series is a celebration of Bollywood aesthetics, Indian fashion, and the way in which Eastern cultural motifs have crossed borders and influenced Western tastes, particularly through trade, textiles, and cinema.

Creative Direction:
The series combines bold, colourful painted backgrounds with intricately patterned foregrounds, primarily inspired by traditional paisley motifs—a design that originated in Persia and India and eventually made its way into Western fashion and interiors.

All works were painted directly onto cotton fabric, a deliberate choice to reflect the historical journey of cotton as a cultural connector. Once a staple in Eastern dress and daily life, cotton became one of the most widely traded and adopted materials in the West, symbolising the larger narrative of cultural exchange and hybridity.

Visually, the series is designed to be aesthetically captivating, with its saturated palettes and layered intricacy, mirroring the opulence and energy of Bollywood, while inviting viewers to appreciate the quiet complexity of cultural storytelling through surface and material.

Key Contributions:
• Created a fine art textile series for exhibition that explores cross-cultural identity and influence
• Utilised cotton as both canvas and concept, reflecting material and trade history between East and West
• Developed a richly detailed visual language of pattern and colour, inspired by paisley and Indian decorative arts
• Explored themes of heritage, globalisation, and aesthetic evolution through contemporary painted forms

This body of work merges traditional and modern techniques to reflect not only my artistic identity, but also the ongoing story of global visual dialogue, where East meets West, and cultures converge in colour.
